Situation
84% of schools in Tanzania do not have hand washing facilities, 46% lack access to safe drinking water, 52% do not have adequate sanitation and hygiene facilities for girls & 96% of schools do not have WASH facilities suitable for disabled children. This makes children vulnerable to illnesses such as diarrhea, worms and urinary tract infections that have a knock-on effect on their education. Furthermore, girls reaching puberty are less likely to regularly attend school when menstruating.
Solution
Repair, improve & maintain adequate clean water & toilet facilities.Training for Officers, Teachers & School WASH club members on Fit for School method & menstrual hygiene management. Installation of 21 group hand-washing facilities with the provision of soap accommodating up to 22 children. Establish school WASH clubs which will comprise of 20-30 students who will act as peer educators. Training 8 WASH Peer Co-ordinators to work with teachers to facilitate meetings to adapt lessons on WASH.
