In East Africa up to 16 million people are on the brink of starvation. 100,000 people in South Sudan are already facing famine. CARE is already responding but needs urgent help to prevent more people dying of hunger.

  • The scale of this crisis could be catastrophic. In Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda 16 million people are at risk of starvation. In South Sudan 100,000 people are already facing famine. As families are skipping meals, women and girls are the most vulnerable as they eat last and least. They are also put increased risk of assault as drought means they often walk an average of 50km to collect water for their families.

    CARE is on the ground in all five countries providing urgently needed food, clean water, emergency nutrition for mothers and children and protection for women and girls. For the long term CARE is providing agricultural support for farmers and livelihoods
