The overall goal of this project is to contribute to the reduction of visual impairment caused by uncorrected refractive error (URE) and low vision by developing community eye care services through a community outreach programme and training and education of local clinicians in Quiha.

Situation
The current population of Ethiopia is approximately 85,000,000, the prevalence of uncorrected refractive error accounts for 3.7% of this figure. With a prevalence of blindness equalling 1.4%, due to cataract 50%, trachoma 11.5% and refractive error 7.8%. The economic burden of this, based solely on productivity loss is $75 million per annum. To combat this problem the Ethiopian Government health budget is only the equivalent of £1 per person per year.
