We are seeking donations towards a £15m campaign to build five new Maggie's Centres in England and Wales. Our network of award-winning Centres in Scotland, where visitor numbers grew by 31% last year, has transformed the way in which healthcare professionals and architects approach the care of people affected by cancer, and this is an exciting opportunity to extend our reach in the UK.

    Situation

A Maggie’s Centre is a welcoming, friendly and non-institutional place, adjacent to a cancer treatment hospital, which provides support for people with any kind of cancer, their families, friends and carers. Each Centre is created to a unique design, donated by some of the world’s leading architects, including Frank Gehry, Richard Rogers and Zaha Hadid. We offer an uplifting, inspiring atmosphere, using natural light, décor, art and furnishing to reduce stress levels and promote a sense of healing and well-being. There are quiet spaces available for confidential counselling, communal kitchen areas and relaxation spaces, and a well-stocked library of free information resources, reference guides and self-help books of interest to patients and carers. Our pioneering programme of information, psychological support, stress management and practical help in areas such as nutrition and welfare benefits is delivered by a small professional team of qualified staff. It also incorporates informal drop-in support, short courses and workshops. All services are free of charge, and visitors are welcome to return as often as they wish. While no referral from a health professional is needed, we work closely to ensure that all our services are fully complementary to NHS provision. The first Maggie's Centre outside Scotland has just opened in West London. We now need to raise £15m to build a further five Centres in Swansea, Cheltenham, Nottingham, Newcastle and Oxford. Several gifts have already been pledged towards this target, and we would be delighted to talk with potential donors about how they could become involved in our work, as we embark on an exciting period of expansion.
