We wish to revitalise our main garden, create raised beds and wide shady paths that can be accessed by wheelchair users and hospital beds. We want a sensory garden that will provide an outlet for the patients and relatives visiting the hospice, many of whom have no access to gardens at home.

    Situation

Due to the urban setting in the East End of London, St Joseph's Hospice has limited outside space. We know how much people value access to the outside space, and want this area to match the high quality available throughout the rest of the hospice. We wish to provide facilities further and encouraging patients to spend more time off the wards. We need to provide a welcoming space that better fits the physical needs of those living with a life-limiting illness.

    Solution

By providing a sensory garden that includes wide pathways and raised flower beds, we will enable more patients to access the gardens. We know that when patients are well enough, spending time away from the wards is an essential element in maintaining independence and quality of life. The new garden combined with the completion of the new (fully funded) garden room will ensure that we can offer the best level of services to patients at a time when they need it most.
