We would like to start a Saturday Club for children age 8 to 13, the aims of which would be to improve links with local young people, offer them enjoyable and worthwhile experiences that raise their awareness of sustainability issues and work with them to engender a sense of custodianship of the Farm, their place in the world and ultimately the wider environment.

    Situation

A recent community survey revealed that the local community would like there to be more on offer at the Farm at weekends – current levels of funding mean we only have staff on site Monday to Friday. The volunteers who feed animals at the weekend tell us that local children are waiting for them when they come to feed the animals and are very eager to be involved. The additional activity at the weekend will have a beneficial effect in terms of more community involvement, reduced vandalism, access to toilet facilities for visitors and the opportunity for staff to engage with weekend visitors. We would hold:- Regular animal feeding/care session – which will include discussion about food and responsible animal rearing. Involvement with the animals encourages a sense of responsibility and some young people are quite surprised to discover that eggs come from chickens not ASDA! Regular nature detective session with emphasis on the seasons and importance of conserving natural spaces. The children would create and care for a Mini –Allotment and Nature Garden around the building and there would be a different activiies each week e.g. junk sculpture making that would include discussion around recycling. Salary costs £3647 (2 workers for a morning plus prep time) Specialists x 4 @£150 day £600 Trip 15 x £20 per head £300 Materials and equipment £500 eg camera, binoculars, plants TOTAL £5047 per year
