    Situation

Act for Change has much anecdotal evidence of the success of our work, we are now ready to learn in more detail what aspects of the Act for Change event result in improved behaviour and attitudes for individual young people. On Friday 13th February sixth form students in a Hertfordshire school will meet a man who was a child survivor of the Holocaust and hear his vivid recollections. They will learn about courageous individuals who helped others to survive, and discuss their feelings and their intentions for the future in small groups with trained Act for Change facilitators. Finally a creative workshop will enable a less verbal response. The day ends with a balloon release, celebrating commitment to personal acts for change. The purpose is to enable an experience of empathy for someone superficially quite different, that experience is then shared among the students within their tutor group. All then consider how to take practical steps in expressing those positive feelings. The goals of the project are changes in attitude and behaviour such as teamwork, increased co-operation, commitment, consideration for others, and personal goal-setting. The full cost of the day is about £2100, including payment for facilitators and the support team, travel expenses, briefing teachers in advance and debriefing thereafter, and the cost of balloons.
