Multi-sensory environments improve the quality of life for people with complex disabilities. They enhance sensory skills such as hand to eye co-ordination and enable disabled people to learn different relaxation techniques and strategies to manage pain, anxiety, stress and behaviour.

    Situation

The National Star College currently has only a small converted ‘relaxation room’ in which to offer multi sensory therapies for students with complex disabilities. The room is constantly in use but can only support 30% of our students. We cannot offer emergency sessions to students in severe discomfort, experiencing behavioural problems, or high levels of stress. In addition the room is not sound proofed, is poorly ventilated and there is no waiting room or storage space.

    Solution

We will build a multi-sensory suite containing 3 multi-sensory rooms. The multi-sensory suite will be equipped with a variety of specialist audio, light and touch, and rough and tumble equipment such as colour change lights, projectors, responsive bubble tubes, rebound therapy trampoline, wall and floor cushions, and enabling technology that gives students with complex disabilities the independence to control their environment through the use of infrared technology.
