Rainforest is only successfully protected when it improves the lives of local people. As these are some of the world’s most vulnerable people, the project will give healthcare access to 15 of Cool Earth’s partner villages, ensuring rainforest protection goes hand in hand with better lives.

    Situation

Half of Peru’s indigenous population die before they reach 40 years-old. Infant mortality in the region is twice the national average at 42 deaths per 1,000 births. In 14 of the 15 project villages there are no medical facilities. The nearest hospital and doctor is an eight-hour boat trip and two-hours by car. Combined with the high costs of Peru’s health service, this means that our rainforest partners are at huge risk from preventable conditions.

    Solution

Increase healthcare access for 15 rainforest villages. Build and equip Medical Outposts in the 14 villages with no medical facilities. Train and employ two Health Promoters for each village to dispense medicines safely and improve hospital evacuation and triage. Register community members for National Health Insurance (SIS) to stop costs preventing treatment or further burdening villages that are already in poverty. (The administrative process excludes many remote communities.)
