Argus Rescue - Durham Wildlife Trust manages some of the key sites for the northern brown argus butterfly, a UK Biodiversity Action Plan species. Monitoring carried out by the Trust has shown a 5-year decline in butterfly numbers on its sites, the reasons for which are unknown. The Trust is seeking to implement a 2 year project, in conjunction with partners in the Durham Biodiversity Partnership, to increase the range of factors monitored at key sites, including climate data and habitat data. This will involve a project officer co-ordinating community action to carry out the monitoring work, improve existing habitats and create new habitat. This suite of actions will lead to a greater understanding of the ecology of the northern brown argus and allow the Trust to put together an action plan to ensure the survival of this iconic species.
