    Situation

Why Families Apart : Recent research shows that children of prisoners number in excess of 160,000 and there is concern that these children face significant social disadvantage. Kingston WelCare's Families Apart Project is funded for the year April 2009 to March 2011. The project will ensure children of Kingston families have access to services that will lessen the impact of parental imprisonment, and improve their opportunity to succeed in future life. Identifying these children can be difficult, so it is essential that responsibility for recginising these children is shared across all sectors with responsibility for supporting children and young people, and Kingston WelCare is taking forward both an awarness raising agenda and a fexable support service for parents Carers and Children. This project is currently staffed for 24hrs per week at a cost of £20,000 and has a £5,000 budget for running costs. Our aim is tosecure onging funding untill March2012 and increase the staffing to 1 full time post of 36hrs at an additional annual cost of £10,000
