    Situation

Originally designed to inform people about the benefits of organic growing, the Vegetable Kingdom needs to be updated to tackle the concerns of the 21st century - alarming trends in childhood and adolescent obesity, rises in incidents of food allergies, eczema and asthma. With the move away from home cultivation during the second half of the last century, many of today’s young generation do not see the connection between the food bought in supermarkets and the land that produces it. Interest in food and what constitutes a healthy diet has been lost. What better way to rekindle enthusiasm than Garden Organic’s Vegetable Kingdom where, ably assisted by Bothby Blond’s cucumber, District Nurse French bean and Black Sugarsweet beetroot, young people of all ages can learn the history of vegetables, how they arrived in our country, and whether a vegetable is a seed or a pod. The Kingdom also provides windows into the fascinating world of seed conservation where the Heritage Seed Library is protecting over 800 traditional vegetable varieties from extinction.
