Situation
Neurosciences at Addenbrooke’s - Background Addenbrooke’s Neurosciences department provides comprehensive specialised Neurosurgery and Neurology services based on integrating research and best clinical practice. With three wards, a Neurosciences Critical Care Unit (NCCU), Neuro theatres, and Neurosciences Clinics - the specialist service covers a huge population within the East Anglian region and beyond. Apart from care and treatment of brain and spine disorders, Neurosciences offers a wide range of treatments including Epilepsy, Spinal services; offering a regional service linked to spinal trauma, Neuro Oncology and spinal oncology and a Neuro Vascular regional and national neurosurgical service. The need for a portable Neuro CT Scanner CT Scanning is considered to be a necessary element for neurological procedures. Currently 2 – 3 patients a day on NCCU require CT scans. However, transferring very sick, ventilated patients to the static scanner takes an hour and involves input from up to six nursing staff and a consultant anaesthetist - time and staff which could be used on direct patient care within NCCU. The transfer is considered dangerous for the patient and carries an increased risk of infection. Benefits With the portable scanner, the patient would not need to be moved and the procedure would take less than half the time, under the supervision of a radiographer only. The scanner is easily cleaned between patients reducing risk of infection both from the procedure itself and the risk during transfer to the static scanner. There would be limited risk of cross-contamination, following use in wards, to neurotheatres. Future The Neurosurgery Department at Addenbrooke’s has been recognised as an area of significant growth with a nationally recognised profile as a centre of excellence. To maintain this reputation, it is essential that the medical staff are supported to work effectively and efficiently through the provision of state-of-the-art equipment. The world’s first wireless portable scanner, which will also be the first to be purchased in the UK, would be a huge asset in providing continuing excellence in the provision of neurocare both in the present and the future. Total cost of the CT mobile scanner is £253,240. This cannot be afforded through Government funding. The full purchase costs of the scanner are: System, scanner, basic attachments, delivery training and one year warranty £195,000 Standard Perfusion Software Updgrade £ 8,595 Xenon Perfusion Software Upgrade £ 8,595 Handheld Power Injector £ 6,850 Mobile workstation Cart £ 3,430 Conversion bracket £ 3,000 Radiolucent Cranial Stabilization £ 24,950 Total £253,240 An appeal to raise money towards the scanner is currently underway and at the time of writing, over £11,000 has already been raised.
