St Oswald’s Hospice provides holistic care for people at end of life; we also help patients to manage symptoms such as chronic pain, enabling them to return home to enjoy quality time with loved ones. We want to fit out a dedicated space on our inpatient unit for families to use during their stay.

Situation

Our Hospice cares for people who are very seriously ill. Often they spend long periods on our Inpatient Unit. Our bedrooms are lovely but we very much need a designated space where patient and their families can eat together or relax in comfort, enjoying precious hours together. At present we can offer a small and frankly gloomy Quiet Room, or our 'Pop In' a converted patient bedroom. Neither space is appropriate and, with a long waiting list, we can no longer spare the bedroom.

Solution

We have funding to extend our Quiet Room, creating a large, airy space which opens onto a patio area within our beautiful patient garden. Big Give funding would enable us to furnish the space with dining furniture (so families can eat together), comfortable seating and lots of entertainment e.g. TV, music system, games console and books to relieve boredom or help people 'switch off,' during distressing or challenging times. This will also free up the much needed bedroom for Hospice patients.
