Situation
In comparison to the rest of the country, the people inthe northern and upper east regions of Ghana are very poor, scoring lower on the human development indicators. They are mostly subsistence farmers with little to sell. To help improve yields farmers use chemical fertilisers that often contain banned and illegal substances that are harmful to health and the environment. Knowledge of organic farming methods is very limited and farmers lack training and support in rearing livestock.
Solution
Working with our partner CSRC, we are implementing a three year project to address these issues. The key project objective is to 'Develop the capacity, skills ans knowledge of farmers in northern Ghana in order that they may better meet their own needs, claim their rights and increase their well being through a sustainable agricultural programme.'
