There are over 770,000 children and young people who are disabled in the UK, the majority of which live at home and supported by their families which can become emotionally, physically and financially demanding. Our Life Enhancing Equipment Programme aims to support these young people and their families giving access to education and recreational experiences, improving health wellbeing and their quality of life.

    Situation

We receive appeals every week from individuals and organisations asking for help with pieces of equipment. These are vital daily items that often go unconsidered and yet add up to many thousands of pounds every year. This equipment may be as simple as a bath mat, toilet seats, bath hoists, plastic sheets, feeding tubes, walking equipment and wheelchairs. Much of this equipment is not readily available from the NHS and must be purchased by the families. Every appeal is investigated by a committee composed of members of the Variety Club Children's Charity, two of whom are health professionals and each item of equipment must be endorsed by a health professional to ensure the equipment is suitable to help the children reach their full potential. Items range from £6,577 for an Electric Wheelchair , £3277 for a Manual Wheelchair, £1,995 for a Sports Wheelchair, £590 for a Standing Frame to £209 for a Communicator.
