The UK’s population is getting older and as life expectancy increases, there is a corresponding rise in the need for orthopaedic intervention. Surgery is not risk free and there is still a high death rate from injuries such as a broken hip. By reducing falls in the elderly, and by optimising care and recovery for those who do fall and require surgery, we can help to save lives and greatly improve quality of life.
ORI will run a series of research projects with NHS hospitals and industry partners to improve patient care. This research will translate directly into improved training for surgeons; improved surgical and rehabilitation techniques; and the introduction of the latest technologies and medical devices for orthopaedic patients. These measures will drastically improve care for patients, by speeding up recovery, preventing complications, and reducing surgery induced morbidity and mortality.
