The Mark Scott Foundation was formed 13 years ago in memory of Mark Scott – a talented young boy who was tragically killed in an unprovoked sectarian attack. The Leadership for Life Award was created as a positive response to Mark’s death, offering young people the chance to increase their confidence, self-esteem, leadership and communication skills, whilst delivering socially valuable community projects which they identify. The Leadership for Life Award is delivered by The Outward Bound Trust. Over 200 participants selected from over 60 schools throughout Central Scotland take part in a five day residential course which includes classroom based learning, problem solving and outdoor activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, and an overnight mountain expedition. In the latter stages of the residential course, participants are separated into 34 project teams of six people. Each team identifies a project that will benefit members of their local community, and are responsible for the design and implementation of the project including raising funds to cover any costs involved. Teams work over the next six or seven months to complete their community project, supported by teachers, Outward Bound staff and volunteers from The Mark Scott Foundation. Upon successful completion of their community projects, participants are presented with The Mark Scott Leadership for Life Award at a formal Ceremony held in Glasgow. The end goals of the project are to develop the participants' talents and leadership potential making them more attractive to colleges/employers, to deliver community projects bringing benefits to local communities, and to promote inter-generational and territorial understanding and tolerance. The total cost of delivering The Leadership for Life Award is £260,000.
