There is no Mikvah in Cambridge or East Anglia, despite there being established communities in Cambridge, Norwich, Colchester and Peterborough, and many Jews living in towns and villages between, and numerous business, tourist and academic visitors. We have full city council planning permission for the community mikvah at our premises in Milton Road, Cambridge. There is no other property in East Anglia that has mikvah planning permission, and therefore a mikvah at Milton Road is the only solution available to the married Jewish women of Cambridge. The superstructure, a detached brick built building with a tiled roof, and cavity wall insulation already has many utility connections, eg electricity and water. We now need the balance of the funds to complete the Mikvah installation.

Money spent to date: A six figure sum purchasing the freehold £3,000 donated by a UK Jewish charity for obtaining Planning Permission £4,000 donated by our members on further architects and engineering plans Further sums required: £175,000, to install and fully decorate the Mikvah However, we would like to raise more than this to cover contingencies, and to set up a fund for future maintenance and servicing. Running Costs: We will use some renewable energy in the mikvah to keep running costs low. We are particularly keen on solar thermal for some of the hot water heating, as the mikvah building has a South/South East facing flat roof with no buildings obstructing the sunshine. This will provide hot water even on the coldest of sunny winter days. Expert Team: We have retained consulting Architects and Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and also Structural Engineers, all of whom are based outside of Greater London, and are therefore cheaper than London based professionals. Our architect worked on the plans for the NW London Eruv. Usage and Halachic compliance: The mikvah benefits from excellent night time lighting, which will be expanded and improved, with an elegant pathway approach, and there is plenty of on and off-street parking available, near the mikvah. Our Mikvah will be under the strict and regular halachic supervision of the most respected halachic authorities in the UK, and we will be paying for regular inspections by world renowned experts in Mikvah kashrus, who will visit from London at our expense to ensure the mikvah is properly managed. The local women will be given a rigorous training in the laws of Mikvah usage and will establish a rota for the orderly supervision and cleaning of the Mikvah, and will employ cleaners and outside laundry services as appropriate. Our medium term goal is to employ our own communal rabbi with experise in Mikvaot. We anticipate initial usage levels of approximately 20 to 25 women per month, with rising levels of usage over time. Currently, these women have to travel to London. In summer this means not returning home until 1am. Women without cars, of which there are many in Cambridge, must use public transport, putting themselves at unecessary delay and danger. Bookings for the mikvah will be made in advance via a dedicated telephone booking line, and bookings will be confirmed to the user in advance by a reply telephone confirmation. Mikvah booking arrangemetns will be posted on our website. Donors of £1,000 will be acknowledged on a plaque in the mikvah foyer. Donors of £10,000 will be honoured as Patrons of the Mikvah Donors of £150,000 or more will be entitled to have the Mikvah named in honour or in the memory of the person of their choice.
