Kirkwood Hospice has been established 22 years. During that time it has cared for over 9,000 patients through its in-patient unit, as well as providing advice, support and care for relatives and carers of patients. The Hospice also has a thriving day hospice, Support & Therapy and a Family Care Team who provide bereavement support for adults and children throughout Kirklees (West Yorkshire). The cost of providing services has increased from £300,000 in 1987, when the Hospice opened, to £3.9million in 2009. With only 20% of this amount provided by statutory funding, this leaves over £3.2million required from voluntary sources every year. An important income stream for the Hospice is received through Legacies, donated by Hospice supporters. In 2007/08, this amounted to over £650,000. However, although income from legacies fluctuates year on year, the overall trend suggests that as a percentage of our overall income, this stream is falling. In order to reverse this trend we are proposing launching a new marketing campaign to boost awareness of the value of legacies and hopefully increase income. We have negotiated some pro bono time from a designer and are in the latter stages of finalising our advertisements. We have also negotiated an excellent rate with CBS to promote legacies throughout our region with 13 foot posters on the sides of buses in Kirklees. The cost of these ads is £2500x4 and this will provide us with posters on the side of 28 streetliner buses for 4 months of the year. This will enable us to provide some sustainable marketing for this vital income stream.
