The Transitional Advocate’s role is to provide guidance to young people with a learning disability to enable them to have more confidence about their future after they leave school. The project will build their confidence and life skills about what they are able to achieve once they leave school and move into adult services e.g. further education, employment opportunities.

The transitional advocate delivers the ‘Your Choice’ workshop and it is a workshop that he has designed himself. He runs a 12 week course across each of the three school terms, Autumn, Spring and Summer. Interest for the workshops is advertised to the young people at the start of each school year and then suitable numbers are allocated to each 12 week term course. Therefore, throughout the school year the transitional advocate delivers the project to three separate groups of young people with learning disabilities. The objective of the workshop is for the young people to produce their own portfolio specifically designed about themselves. This will cover details about their past and present and along with the support of the transitional advocate, they will be able to include a piece on their own plan for the future e.g. job prospects, family thoughts. Young people with a learning disability do not normally get the opportunity to have their own advocate. Predominantly this is an adult service. However, our transitional advocate provides the support throughout the course to all the students and enables them to make their own choices about their future. There are still far too many young people with a learning disability not receiving this support but as our transitional advocate only works part-time, he can only reach a small number of the local population. Currently, around 25 students benefit from this service every year but this figure can increase if a suitable volunteer support worker could be found. This voluntary support would allow the workshops to be opened up to more young people and is something we are actively addressing.
