There are thousands of young people – jobless, homeless and in many cases stuck in the revolving door of crime – in urgent need of the support, encouragement and skills that Amber can provide. We have a highly successful residential programme in the south west and we have recently expanded to the south east. We have recently opened a new residential centre in Surrey but need £25,000 to convert outbuildings to team rooms.

Amber helps prepare young people for independent living so that they can contribute to society rather than living on benefits or committing crime. They stay for about 6 months – there is no set time limit – during which we give them, often for the first time, normal life; cooking, cleaning, sport, projects, team work, setting goals and working towards them, friendship and fun. • Since we began in 1995 over 1,100 young people have successfully left Amber into work, college and stable accommodation. • Our success rate the last 5 years has exceeded 81%. • Our re-offending rate at Amber is 7%, well below the national average for this age group. • The overall pass rate of young people sitting literacy and numeracy tests at Amber is over 80%, well above the national average. • The average cost of someone successfully completing the Amber programme is £12,000 – a third of what it costs the country to deal with one problematic drug user every year and a seventh of the amount that a re-offending ex-prisoner costs the criminal justice system. We opened a new centre in Surrey in February that has all the land, space and facilities we need to accommodate and help 28 young people transform their lives but we need to convert outbuildings to team rooms which will cost around £25,000. We will happily acknowledge a donor by naming the team rooms after them, or with another appropriate agreed name.
