Our specialist suicide prevention helpline, HOPELineUK 0800 068 4141, provides young adults and their families with emotional support, practical advice and information. We offer options to suicidal people which support life, and strategies to all young people to prepare them for those transition points and events in their lives which are most characteristically associated with suicide.

Claiming the lives of 1,400 young people a year, suicide (responsible for more than 1 in 6 of 15-34 year old deaths), is the largest single cause of death in this age group. For 15-34 year old males, it accounts for nearly 1 in 5 deaths (19%) HOPELineUK delivers 56 hours weekly of specialist suicide prevention telephone helpline support, covering out of hours and service every day of the year. Provided by advisers trained and experienced in dealing with suicidal young people and their families, the service builds up people on the margins of their emotions or mental health by: providing emotional support, addressing their immediate safety, and providing practical advice & information to build competence and confidence to take the next steps to get the support they need - including referrals using our database of 7,592 agencies accessible by location, languages spoken and whether they are open at the time of the call. PAPYRUS is the only charity that works inclusively with young people, their extended family and peer support networks to break down the young person’s isolation and empower the people who can provide 24 hour care. With 85% of calls suicide specific, our service hours cover times when 88.4% of calls are received. At least 2,134 people benefited from the helpline in the year to 1 October 2009. More than 2 out of 3 beneficiaries whose ages we know were 35 and under; 1 in 13 were 15 or younger. During the period of HOPELineUK’s operation, suicide statistics have fallen 10%, with particular progress among young men. £39.38p pays for all helpline costs for one hour £302 buys 2,000 cards with the HOPELineUK number £876 sponsors 1,000 HOPELineUK posters £1,140 buys for Google Ad Words so young people find us £1, 740 pays for all telephone costs supporting the helpline £11,032 sponsors the out of hours and weekend service for three months £115,000 safeguards the existing service for a full year
