Situation
The macroeconomic and social situation in Southern Sudan is one of the worst in the world, due to it having recently emerged from a 20 year civil war. Five Talents is working with a consortium of development agencies to deliver business training and micro-loans to facilitate economic recovery and development. The consortium has over two years experience in Southern Sudan and has already carried out adult education in basic literacy and business skills. Work is ongoing to establish a village bank and savings groups, as well as identifying small and medium sized enterprises for investment that will benefit the community as a whole. Our aim is to develop these operations in Liethom as a test-case for replication elsewhere in southern Sudan. The entire county and district currently lack any kind of banking services and with Five Talents’ microfinance experience in other east African countries we are well placed to assist this aspect. The District has a total population of 250,000 people! [check] Five Talents approach is to empower the local people with business skills and financial resources for their own development. We employ local people in our projects and aim to create a self-sustaining operation in which the charity plays only a background, supporting role. Our total budget for this project is around £250,000 over 3 years, and so a donation of £100,000 or more make a major impact on this work.
