The Mawego Girls Boarding School will provide secondary education for disadvantaged girls in a rural area of western Kenya. It will provide a nurturing learning environment for enabling girls to concentrate on their education, raise their performance and access further educational opportunities.
Situation
An estimated one million children of school-going age are not attending school. Up to 13,000 Kenyan girls drop out of school every year as a result of pregnancy alone. HIV prevalence in Kenyan women aged between 15 and 24 is five times as high as their male counterparts. Better educated girls are less likely to marry early and contribute sustainable income into the home. They are more likely to practice family planning and their children have a higher survival rate.
Solution
The school will offer access to good quality teaching in English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, French, Kiswahili, Religious Studies, Home Science, Business Studies and agriculture. It will also provide students with social worker care, sexual health education and peer to peer mentoring. Vulnerable girls, that are provided with this kind of additional support, will gain more confidence and self-esteem and are far more likely to perform well at school.
