Many of the wild animals that we work with at Wildwood are in urgent need of protection, and are listed in local and national Biodiversity Action Plans. These species include the water vole, red squirrel and the hazel dormouse. The water vole, which was until recently widespread in lowland Britain, is now the most endangered mammal in the UK. These critically endangered species need to be rescued, trans-located and captive bred if we are to ensure their survival.

We need to construct an Endangered Species Rescue Centre at Wildwood Trust, to support our work in environmental protection. The Centre will provide facilities for captive breeding, research and environment study, as requested by our research partners at WildCRU at Oxford University, and the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology at the University of Kent at Canterbury. Using the conservation centre as a learning resource, we can study the causes for the decline of protected species.
