Every day whales and dolphins face being entangled in fishing nets, poisoned by chemicals, harassed, hunted, starved and evicted from their ocean homes. These intelligent social mammals need safe havens at sea. WDCS aims to create 10 highly protected areas in the world's oceans by 2012.

All around the world, whales and dolphins are fighting for survival. Few of the areas on which even the most endangered populations depend for survival are protected. It is vital then that provision is made for protected places where whales and dolphins can raise their families, find food, and rest and play.

WDCS is aiming to create 10 highly-protected areas for whales and dolphins in the world’s oceans, called marine protected areas (MPAs), by the year 2012. These safe havens will protect critical habitat for vulnerable and endangered populations in the oceans of the world, from Scotland to Australia.
