Our partner provides medical rehabilitation therapy services to children with chronic conditions by means of non-invasive, low-cost treatment methods for the most vulnerable in this poorest country in Europe. They currently operate out of a cramped 2-room apartment which seriously limits the numbers of children which can be supported. We are seeking to build a new therapy centre to extend services to more children.

Officially there are at least 13,000 disabled children in Moldova - the true figure is more likely to be above 50,000. The state can ill-afford to offer any treatment - and at an average wage of USD130 per month families can not buy any support themselves. There are very few non-governmental direct service facilities. Since 2000 our partner, Hippocrates Centre, has provide free services to the most disadvantaged families such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, massage therapy, orthotics and speech therapy. All of this is carried out in a small, 2-room apartment. The need is for larger premises so that: - more children can receive this life-transforming therapy - additional services can be provided, such as inclusion of a hydro-therapy pool - more parents can be taught non-invasive techniques (such as portage) to treat their own children thus further expanding the numbers of children benefitting from treatment. Estimated cost to purchase land and construct a centre is GBP200,000 and of this GBP35,000 has already been secured but the balance is essential to secure this hope for the children of Moldova. A gift of GBP165,000 will secure this work which will be a flagship centre for transforming the care and treatment for disabled children. Essential therapeutic equipment such as physio tables, massage equipment, sensory and hydro-therapy equipment will make a demonstrable difference in the lives of 500 children a year directly and thousands more indirectly by training techniques for both parents and specialists.
