Thousands of people benefit from improved self-esteem, confidence and social skills in the positive and non-threatening structure promoted by the John Muir Award. The Award is the John Muir Trust’s educational initiative. It helps engage 1000’s of people per year to achieve an Award whilst benefiting from the well-being linked to being in a natural and wild place. The John Muir Trust aims to reach 30,000 more participants throughout Scotland over the next 3 years, with over 25% from disadvantaged backgrounds and 85% below the age of 25.

Situation
The need: Demand for the Award - around 12,500 new participants a year – means we need to develop our capacity to support more diverse organisations and individuals. In particular we need to support the most vulnerable or groups with limited opportunities – like pupils with additional needs, homeless & at risk of homelessness, people with mental or physical health issues - to get outdoors and do something for the environment. What we will do: We will work with around 200 organisations throughout Scotland to help them deliver the Award to participants. We will provide these groups with training, support and materials. We will promote the Award through local and national initiatives. What difference will we make? 10,000 people a year can ‘put something back’ by conserving local wild places and being active in their natural world. Harder to help people have more opportunities to volunteer and engage in their local environment. £50,000 would enable 10,000 participants per year - 2,500 from backgrounds of social exclusion – to benefit from the experience of participating in an Award. “The John Muir Award has given many hundreds of young people from the margins of society the opportunity to make a contribution to conserving wild places and receive acknowledgement for their hard work.” Director, Venture Scotland
