Kishorit is a unique community of 150 adults with physical and mental disabilities. As well as communal life and therapy, residents benefit from work which promotes independence and rehabilitation. We are building a vineyard and winery to create more jobs and the community’s economic sustainability.

    Situation

Many people with learning or physical disabilities find it very hard, or impossible, to hold down a job and therefore struggle to live independently. Many live with family or in sheltered environments where they rely on carers to make decisions for them. Participation in work is a central to life in Kishorit. Work provides residents with a routine that fosters responsibility and self-reliance, creates opportunities for making friends, as well as improving their physical and mental skills.

    Solution

Kishorit has already developed a number of for-profit enterprises including an organic goat dairy, wooden toy workshop and TV production studio. To generate income and provide a range of employment opportunities for its members, Kishorit needs to expand its economic infrastructure. Therefore, it has established a vineyard and is planning a boutique winery.
