Situation
Battersea Summer Scheme primarily operates during the school summer holidays when many young have no activities or opportunities to keep them occupied. They often have absent parents and the street becomes their playground which is where many problems arise. Boredom and poverty are a dangerous combination. and with a lack of positive direction many of the young turn to crime or become victims of crime. Gang culture is high in the borough and cultural and locality issues create many problems.
Solution
By giving young people in the borough an activity to train towards and eventually to compete in it will motivate them to organise and attend traing sessions. This will help keep them occupied and away from trouble. The tournament itself is a competitve day out with medals for all attending and trophies for the winners.
