The Monkey Sanctuary Trust is committed to reducing its environmental impact, acting as an example of sustainable living and educating the public about environmentally beneficially measures they can take. The Trust has already become very efficient with dealing with waste and is now tackling the carbon footprint created by our energy use. The Sanctuary is in a rural area of great importance for native British wildlife. The monkeys at the Sanctuary are South American breeds. Most are rescued from the UK pet trade. They require heated indoor enclosures as well as outdoor areas. A wood pellet burner is the only carbon-neutral heating system that can provide the level of heating we need. We are currently building a new indoor room to house rescued monkeys. In close proximity to this room are 3 more (bigger) rooms which are heated with very inefficient electric heaters. Further afield is the rest of the animal rescue centre. This is now heated with an old, inefficient and often failing, oil-fired boiler. We would like to install a wood pellet burner system capable of providing heat to the new and existing rooms. The total requirement is approximately 30KW. We have budgeted for a 40 KW boiler. This will cover current need, take account of heat loss in the pipes and allow for expansion in the future. With the realisation of this project, the vast majority of the heating for the animal territory will be carbon-neutral. We will make new displays explaining the heating system and how it benefits the environment and us all, encouraging visitors to consider similar systems.
