To supply 2,200 computers to state schools in Zambia over a 12-month period. The computers will be sourced from donations in the UK, refurbished by IT Schools Africa, in partnership with the Prison Service, and shipped to our in-country NGO, Computers for Zambian Schools in Lusaka, for distribution

Situation
IT literacy is a critical issue for the life chances of African children and the economic development of their countries. Across Africa there is an acute shortage of computers in schools. Almost all state and faith-based schools in Zambia have received 10-20 computers from our programme and taking into account computers received from other sources, these schools now have 20-30 computers. However, with class sizes of 40-60 this is inadequate and the number of computers needs to be closer to 100
Solution
We estimate that the number of children using the 2,200 computers over a six-year lifespan will be around 70,000. The outcomes we are seeking to achieve are: more Zambian children gaining basic ITC literacy skills; more Zambian children passing recognised exams in ICT; improved job prospects for these children based on these skills and qualifications; and a broadening of the Zambian economy to include more knowledge based activities. We are already seeing some evidence of the above.
