Dogs Trust has 9 Education Officers across the UK and 1 in the Republic of Ireland. They deliver free workshops to help children learn about responsible dog ownership and staying safe around dogs. We want to appoint more Education Officers in areas where we have identified they will have the greatest impact in raising the status and understanding of dogs.

EDUCATION WORKSHOPS… In 2008, we spoke to approximately 67,230 children, during 2,241 workshops in 555 schools. Our aim is to teach children about responsible dog ownership whilst at primary school. We believe educating dog owners of tomorrow can reduce the problem of stray and abandoned dogs in the future. Workshops are closely linked with UK and Ireland National Curriculums and we offer a range of themes. Workshops are interactive with lots of discussion, debates and role playing, as we want children to leave feeling positive about responsible dog ownership. Education Officers often take their own dogs into the classroom which is an excellent opportunity for practical learning and really brings lessons to life for pupils. It is hoped children will take this information home and our key messages will also reach brothers and sisters, parents and the wider community. Education Officers work with local councils to deliver talks to disadvantaged young people about working with animals and careers in animal welfare. Feedback from pupils and teachers alike shows our key messages are getting through to the youngsters and their parents. What we spend on an Education Officer and to run our programme… (Costs taken from 2008 annual expenditure) TOTAL Anticipated Year 1 cost for an Education Officer £55,380 ANNUAL COST excluding set up cost £37,380 Donating £250,000 will fund an education officer for 5 years. Dogs Trust receives no government funding and we rely on voluntary donations to continue our Education work. Donating to our Education Programme will: 1.Help us to prevent cruelty by encouraging a respect for animals amongst children across the UK and Republic of Ireland. 2.Help us to reduce the number of stray and abandoned dogs in the UK and Ireland, saving the lives of many dogs that would otherwise be put to sleep in local authority pounds. 3.Keep children safe around dogs, helping to prevent accidents in the UK and Ireland.
