  • A combination of drought and conflict has left over 16 million people across four countries in East Africa in need of humanitarian assistance. The UN declared famine in parts of Unity State of South Sudan on 20 February 2017. People in Somalia and parts of Kenya and Ethiopia are also suffering already because of malnutrition. The number of people at risk of starvation is unprecedented for the East Africa region and cholera outbreaks across the region are exacerbating the situation.

All thirteen DEC member charities are already on the ground delivering life-saving aid. They are ready to upscale their humanitarian support once increased funding is received.
