It is Doorway's 21st anniversary this year. We wish to buy a property for homeless young people and teach them independent living skills so they are able to move forward positively in their lives and fulfill their needs and potential.
Situation
Doorway helps young homeless people from significantly disadvantaged and deprived backgrounds. The consequences of being homeless can be brutal, damaging their resilience and impacting upon their ability to learn or retain employment. Many suffer from poor educational outcomes, inadequate support mechanisms, low aspirations, lack of motivation, low self-esteem and confidence. Approximately 80% of the young people we help are NEET (not in employment, education or training).
Solution
We encourage all young people we support to attend various workshops we run such as Lifewise and Job Club where they can gain accredited AQA qualifications, as well as sign up for character building activities which encourage team working and leadership and which will help equip them with the skills, attitudes and motivation necessary to move forward positively in their lives and fulfil their needs and potential and become settled happily in the community.
