Children and young people's well-being in the UK is suffering from the impacts of high entrenched inequality but their input is largely absent from policy discussions. A strategic framework for action is needed to enable their participation in shaping their future in which all can flourish

Situation

Over the last year we have seen an increase in the number of school students and young people who are motivated to tackle inequality in their communities. Our pilot Young Equality Campaigners programme has been inundated with ideas, reaching around 80 young people. We are supporting teachers to facilitate effective discussions on inequality. Building on this engagement, we want to ensure young people’s voices heard in policy debates using our networks, which is currently extremely rare.

Solution

By employing a Youth Coordinator as a trusted point of contact we will develop and deliver, with ongoing consultation with participants, a cohesive strategy to include the voices and opinions of children and young people in the campaign to tackle economic and social inequalities. The role would coordinate and develop resources for schools, Young Equality campaigners, a new Fair Campus campaign, Youth Fairness Commission, school talks, workshop delivery & a volunteer programme for young people.
