Even a brief encounter with the ancient world fires the imagination of the young. Pupils who have access to classical subjects feel empowered with cultural knowledge and language skills. Classics for All (CfA) aims to support 120 new London primary and secondary schools to enjoy classical subjects.
Situation
Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings – students already love the Ancient World. Classical mythology forms the bedrock of much modern art and literature, theatre, visual arts, film and pop culture. Yet 75% of state school pupils in London have no access to Classics at school, leading to great inequality in education. Classics for All will bridge this divide by inspiring schools to embed all things classical on and off the curriculum.
Solution
We will introduce 2,000+ pupils to the Odyssey, Classical mythology, Roman cooking, philosophy, archaelogy, Latin and Greek. We will inspire pupils and equip 200 state school teachers to incorporate Classics in schools through flexible sessions of lively Continuing Professional Development related to the ancient world alongside talks and enrichment days for pupils.
