The rehabilitation centre assists local people in Taquara in Rio de Janeiro who come from backgrounds of prostitution, drug and alcohol problems or are homeless. At the centre they receive accommodation, food, clothing, medical and psychological help, therapy, education and learn new skills.

People who grow up in the favelas and the poorer parts of Rio often don't receive adequate education that will allow them to find work later on in life. They are usually caught up in a criminal environment and the drug scene and often end up in prostitution. Many don't survive past their teens. There is little support in Rio for these people as most social services are over-demanded and under-financed. If nothing is done, this cycle continues from generation to generation.
Firstly the rehab centre provides a place where all physical needs of the adults are met. The centre also provides work shops and basic reading and writing classes. This prepares and enables the people to reintegrate back into society without having to revert back to their old life style. We accompany them in the first few months to make sure they find employment and accommodation. The centre also provides emotional assistance, pastoral care and help in reconciliation with their families.
