Situation
Following the EU Referendum result, there has been a surge in racist and xenophobic rhetoric and incidents. These have highlighted an ongoing issue of weakened community infrastructure in the post-industrial communities of South Wales. Social inclusion is poor, and there are limited opportunities for interacting with people who one might consider 'different' from oneself.
Solution
An initial series of community meetings took place this summer to form community groups in the South Wales area. These groups will organise around issues (particularly local health disadvantage) that will help reinforce the sense of being an inclusive community. Actions will be determined by local people, but may include fun days, solidarity projects, door knocking, shared meals etc. We support new groups with advice, resources and promotion to make these community actions a reality.
