Every year, we receive about 3000 unwanted bikes. Whilst we never turn one away, some of the bikes we receive cannot be refurbished. With this project we will salvage and recycle as much as possible. A team of staff and volunteers will strip them for parts used for refurbishing and recycle the rest.

Situation
The UK is the second biggest producer of waste in the globe. While cycling is a green and sustainable form of transport that should be embraced by all of us, tyres and tubes that are not properly disposed of turn into micro-plastic, ending up in everything we eat and breathe. Every year, we receive about 3000 unwanted bikes and refurbish half of them. Relying on new parts is neither cost effective nor environmentally sound. New volunteers with no mechanical background need specific training.
Solution
With the Reuse&Reduce project we aim to salvage and recycle as much as possible. Under the supervision of a member of our staff, a team of new volunteers will receive training in how to strip a bike for parts, decide what and how much of it can be re-used and what needs to be sent for recycling. Tyres and tubes will be properly recycled. Volunteers with no mechanical experience will learn how a bike is made by taking it apart at their own pace, without the fear of breaking it.
