Access to nature in London is restricted and unequal. Through our learning and engagement programmes we help to provide access, creating opportunities for disadvantaged children, families, young people, and adults. These programmes aid health and wellbeing, educate, and create enjoyable experiences.

Situation
London has the lowest levels of accessible green space in the UK, which is known to contribute to poor health and wellbeing and leads to people feeling disconnected from the natural world. This inequality was more keenly felt during the pandemic. Whilst people are now more aware of their need for nature and its benefits, they are still experiencing barriers to accessing it. We need to provide more opportunities for engagement, enable access, and help people to bring nature into their lives.
Solution
Our Learning and Engagement Programmes, including activities for children and young people, families, and vulnerable adults, all form part of our Community Access Scheme. These programmes ensure that everyone can benefit from the healing power of nature. Through the provision of free activities, we can welcome more people to the Garden, so they too can improve their health and wellbeing and ‘take brightness home’, which is how one of our community groups felt following their time at the Garden.
