The over-stretched prison system is unable to provide adequate educational opportunities with prison-provided education focusing on basic literacy and numeracy. Though prisons offer some workshops for further training, access is limited, a situation exacerbated by the pandemic. Recovery post-pandemic has been much slower in prisons with covid-19 restrictions only lifted in May this year. With ongoing prison staff shortages, prisoners are still spending long periods in their cells each day.

PET will provide distance learning courses and related support, information and guidance for people in prison. Through PET, prisoners can access 120 different courses in levels and subjects that are otherwise unavailable. Distance learning courses can be done in cell and our telephone Advice Line allows learners direct access to PET’s expert support. We will support people to choose courses and progress with their learning, providing something positive to focus on in a difficult environment.
