Music education is essential for every child. Yet schools face many barriers to offering high-quality music, from squeezed budgets and timetables to geographical limitations creating a ‘postcode lottery’. Delivering the music curriculum at primary level often falls to classroom teachers, but only 8% say they feel confident teaching music. These barriers have been exacerbated by Covid: 68% of primary schools reduced music activities in 2020, and many report that activity has not fully resumed.
