Moving from primary to high school can be challenging for children’s mental health, especially after the disruption of COVID-19. We will provide our SPARK Resilience programme, resources and training to 30 schools and out of school settings. Children will gain increased coping skills and resilience.

Situation
Research increasingly recognises the transition to secondary school as one of the most stressful events a child will experience – particularly as it coincides with concerns around increased academic pressure, puberty, social media and changing friendships. If a child struggles with this transition it can have a negative impact on their social, emotional and academic outcomes. After months of interrupted education due to COVID-19, many children are particularly vulnerable to mental ill health.
Solution
Teachers will use our programme ‘SPARK Resilience’ to support their pupils at this challenging time. The programme draws on mindfulness, positive psychology and cognitive behavioural therapy to give children skills to boost their strengths, control strong emotions and reframe habitual ways of thinking. It can be used on its own or as part of a wider school programme supporting transition. Evaluations found the programme to be effective in boosting resilience and preventing depression.
