Situation
Lockdown has been particularly tough for the refugee young people we work with. Refugee children don't have access to many social/educational activities and rarely go on holiday over the summer. This means they miss out on childhood experiences and have low levels of English. The children we work with live in poverty, overcrowded housing, single parent families. They are underachieving at school and have low confidence and self-esteem.
Solution
During the summer holidays we provide a Learning & Activities Summer Club for refugee children incl. trips (4 weeks, 40 activities in 2020). It means refugee children have access to a range of fun, engaging and sometimes challenging childhood experiences like camping, residentials, sports, cooking, music, drama activities. Children improve their learning skills, confidence and English, have fun and make new friends.
