Situation
The Cardigan Bay bottlenose dolphin population is one of two semi-resident populations in the UK. Anthropogenic impacts have been highlighted as a major threat to these dolphins. The Sea Watch Foundation (SWF) has been monitoring this population and the challenges it faces for over 20 years. Outreach, research and funding have been severely disrupted by COVID 19. We are seeking funds to reach the public remotely as well as support our staff in carrying out fieldwork under pandemic guidelines.
Solution
SWF will produce educational materials that can be utilised remotely by home schooling parents and teachers as well as provide a series of talks which can be accessed by the general public via social media. SWF will carry out land and boat based bottlenose dolphin surveys from New Quay, Ceredigion, with staff and a minimal number of local volunteers to conduct photo identification. Survey results will be utilised to estimate population numbers and trends.
