The JMK Trust has been delivering free training and development opportunities for aspiring theatre directors around the UK since 2012. In the wake of the pandemic this support will be even more vital and so we will develop a programme of online and face-to-face activity to take place in 2021.

Situation
There are a variety of routes into working as a theatre director both informal and formal. However the majority of formal opportunities rely on expensive, often London based, training opportunities with early career experiences offering very low or even no income. This excludes many from entering the profession or means they leave it before they have had the opportunity to fully develop their potential. In the wake of the pandemic these problems will be even more acute.
Solution
Drawing upon our years of experience of running our National Programme and the adaptations we made during lockdown to encompass online training, this project will allow us to offer free workshops, mentoring and networking online and, when possible, in person. This will enable all those with an interest in working as a theatre director or theatre maker the chance to gain support in developing their career regardless of their individual circumstances, location or socio-economic background.
