We've been releasing potential through teacher training & mentoring for the last 8 years; training around 800 teachers & having an ongoing mentoring role with about 70 schools. With your support, we envisage investing in an additional 500 teachers [in their understanding of literacy] in 2021.

Zambia has been grappling with low literacy levels in primary schools and many interventions have been made to arrest the falling literacy levels with minimal improvements. It is children in Government and Community schools in developing countries who are most vulnerable to illiteracy. CIA data on Zambia put literacy levels (defined as 15yrs or older and unable to read and write in English) at 63%.

Through teacher training, mentoring and literacy programmes, we are supporting schools to tackle this problem. We have seen literacy levels improve significantly more in the schools we support compared with control schools, even in this COVID-19 year. We now want to develop Hub-Schools in strategic areas to become training resources for schools in their surrounding communities, building on the successes of 2020 where we trained over 400 educators in Jolly Phonics.
