Mid Wales Opera's SmallStages productions take live opera to community venues and small theatres across Wales and the Borders. In Autumn 2020 we will produce our most ambitions SmallStages production yet - Puccini's dramatic masterpiece Il Tabarro in a new version for 6 singers and 4 musicians.

Situation
Opera is seen as an exclusive art form performed in major cities and many people feel it is 'not for them'. For our audiences in Wales and the Borders, opera would traditionally involve a trip to Cardiff or Llandudno. MWO performs in mid-scale theatres but we need to grow our audience and reach new people through community based programming. Last year our SmallStages audience grew by 48% - 1777 people saw Ravel's L'heure Espagnole in places from Fishguard to a school hall in Llanfyllin, Powys
Solution
Our SmallStages productions take live, high quality and highly entertaining productions, specifically designed for flexible touring into the heart of communities. We work with local promoters and unfunded theatres to provide affordable (around £10) tickets to fully staged opera performances sung in English, in new versions of rarely performed works with a reduced orchestration and new translation by our team. It's a great night out and 13% of our audience last year had never seen opera before.
